Originally built on Shackleford Banks in 1885 and moved to its current location in 1901, the home is known as a traditional 'story and a jump' cottage. While on the island, the house had an upstairs but no interior or exterior staircase; residents climbed a ladder to access the upper level and would famously jump out onto the surrounding sand dunes. During later renovations, an interior staircase was added.

The open floor plan maximizes the home's footprint, with heart pine floors and exposed beams from the original structure, believed to have been floated over from Shackleford Banks. Recent improvements include an open and thoroughly renovated kitchen, updated siding with a lifetime warranty, updated bathroom and a new roof installed in 2017.

The home includes the historic 'jump' room, currently used as an additional bedroom. Ceiling heights in the primary bedroom and jump room are below seven feet and are therefore not included in the official heated square footage but are shown on the floor plan as usable space. The total usable area, including these spaces, is approximately 1,284 square feet.

Additional features include an outdoor shower, fenced backyard, alley access with parking pad, and a detached guest house added in the 1920s-1930s that has served as an income-producing rental. The home is also located down the street from the Morehead City Curb Market and near a boardwalk providing access to Bogue Sound.
